Everything you need to safely install Earthwool ceiling batts in an existing roof space.
Safety first
Turn off power at the switchboard before entering the roof space. Wear long sleeves, gloves, a P2 mask and safety glasses, and only step on ceiling joists — never on plasterboard.
Keep insulation clear of downlights, exhaust fans and flues unless they're rated for contact (IC-rated).
Measure and order
Measure the ceiling area and check the joist spacing — most homes are 430mm or 580mm. Use our calculator to work out the number of packs needed for your R-value.
Install the batts
Start at the furthest point from the roof access and work back. Lay batts between joists, butting them firmly together with no gaps. Don't compress them — compression lowers the R-value.
Cut batts to fit with a sharp bread knife or insulation knife, and fit offcuts into small gaps.
Finish up
Do a final check for gaps, keep clearances around fittings, and restore power once you're out of the roof. A typical home can be done in a weekend with two people.
